For example, in the court-martial of US v. Juillerat (2000, MacDill AFB), the defendant's adopted name was a legal common law name under civilian law (and then required for Social Security/IRS purposes) which the Air Force had knowingly used it to induct the defendant. When it was convenient (i.e. after an illegal drug investigation revealed that just having a Colombian wife does not equal cocaine trafficking), the military held that common law names are illegal for males in the military. The rational is that they are not the true name (10 USC 1551) and so, causing someone to believe it is true is 'intent to deceive' (which also makes the common law year of the Lord and wearing camoflage illegal). However, the military refused to investigate the female court-martial member or the judge (who used such a fake name for his wife) because women have an inferior status and lose their identity at marriage, becoming simply a part of their husband.
